Microsoft is working on a built-in speed test for Windows 11 that will let users check their PC’s connectivity without opening a browser or installing a separate application. The feature is currently being tested with Windows Insiders and has received a positive response so far.

Windows 11 already offers an internet speed test shortcut, but it opens Bing’s speed test in a web browser. The new tool is integrated directly into the operating system, making it feel more like a native Windows feature.

Marcus Ash, Microsoft’s lead for Design and Research across Windows & Devices, said the tool was created through an agentic AI workflow directed by a human. He described the approach as an example of AI helping teams move from an idea to customer value more quickly while using WinUI 3 to create more integrated Windows experiences.

Ash also distinguished this process from the low-quality results often associated with “vibe coding.” His comments reflect Microsoft’s broader view of AI as a tool that works alongside people, with human expertise still guiding development.

The speed test’s reception could encourage Microsoft to use similar workflows for additional Windows 11 features. However, the use of AI in software development remains a subject of debate, and future projects may receive different reactions depending on their results.
