South of Midnight creative director David Sears said he probably would not have funded the game himself if he had been making Xbox’s budget decisions. In an interview with MinnMax, he reflected on Microsoft’s approach to financing games and described it as unsustainable in hindsight.
Asked by MinnMax host Ben Hanson whether he would have stopped the funding if he were running Xbox, Sears replied, “Yeah, probably.” He added that although he wanted to make the game, he was “not completely selfless” and might have ended someone else’s funding before the project.
Sears also praised Microsoft’s support for the game, saying the company “encouraged everything” and that Compulsion Games had creative freedom during development.
His comments point to a tension between that freedom and the cost of Xbox’s previous funding approach. Sears said the strategy seemed unsustainable in retrospect and that a “shocking outcome” was therefore to be expected.
