Xbox has begun testing two new ways to play through Xbox Cloud Gaming. On supported smart TVs, players can use a compatible Android or iOS phone as a controller. In the US, the Xbox Nano Controller can also be tested with cloud connect, which links it to the Wi-Fi network and directly to the server running the game.
The phone-controller preview is intended for players who want to play on a TV without a physical controller nearby. Controls open in the phone’s browser, and some games will offer layouts tailored to their gameplay. To enable the feature, users need to turn on Preview Features under Settings > Account in the latest supported Smart TV experience. When they start a game without a connected controller, an option to use a phone will appear.
The phone feature is rolling out on supported TVs in countries where Xbox Cloud Gaming is available. Players can connect by scanning the QR code shown on the TV.
Cloud connect offers an alternative to connecting the Xbox Nano Controller to a TV over Bluetooth. By using Wi-Fi to link the controller directly to the cloud server, it may reduce input latency and make gameplay feel more responsive. The early test is available to players in the US on supported Smart TVs and the web, but does not work with every cloud gaming experience.
To set up cloud connect, users can use the Xbox beta app on Android or the Xbox Accessories app on PC. Xbox Insider enrollment is required when setting up through the PC app. After connecting the controller to Wi-Fi, players can open a supported Xbox Cloud Gaming experience and sign in with the same Xbox account used during setup.
Both features remain in testing, and availability, supported devices and games may be limited. Xbox is inviting participants to share feedback through the preview experience, the Xbox Accessories app on PC or the Xbox mobile app.
