Microsoft says recent Windows 11 updates have made PCs with 8GB of RAM about 20% more responsive than before its work to reduce the operating system’s memory use. The company has been quietly shipping the improvements and says it has also tuned Windows 11 for systems with 4GB, 16GB and other RAM capacities.
The changes arrive as the source reports that rising RAM and storage costs are pushing PC makers to revisit laptops with 8GB of memory. Dell, HP and Acer have recently released models in that category, with prices around $699 and discounts sometimes bringing them lower.
Among the examples are Dell’s XPS 13, which starts at $699.99, or $599.99 for students; HP’s 14-inch OmniBook 5, currently listed at $599.99; and Acer’s Swift Air 14. Each has an Intel Core 5 320 processor and 8GB of LPDDR5x RAM. Their other features differ: the Dell has a 13.4-inch 2560x1600 touch display, the HP offers a 14-inch OLED screen, and the Acer includes 512GB of storage and a 120Hz display.
The source links Microsoft’s focus on memory efficiency to pressure on PC component costs. It says higher RAM prices are leading manufacturers to reconsider systems with 16GB or more, making improvements to Windows 11’s responsiveness on 8GB machines increasingly relevant to buyers.
