Former Xbox Chief Operating Officer Helen Chiang has addressed speculation surrounding her abrupt departure from Microsoft after 21 years at the company. In a lengthy statement shared on LinkedIn, Chiang said claims that she was fired for a policy violation were inaccurate and that silence should not be interpreted as agreement with the reports.

Chiang denied leaking confidential company information to the press, saying she had only communicated with journalists through limited, company-authorized interviews conducted as part of her work. She also rejected suggestions that she had left Xbox to join a competitor, emphasizing her loyalty to the people, teams and businesses she had helped build over two decades.

The former executive further denied engaging in discrimination, bullying, harassment, insider trading, embezzlement or other fraudulent activity. She said she stood by both the results she delivered and the way she treated people throughout her career.

Chiang also disputed the idea that her departure resulted from being passed over for a larger role. She explained that, since having children, she had adopted a more personal definition of ambition and success and had not actively pursued bigger positions or additional responsibilities. She added that she had been promoted into her most recent role in July, rather than seeking it herself.

Although Chiang did not explain what specifically led to her departure, she said she had serious concerns about how standards of fairness and accountability had been applied in her case. She said those concerns deserved to be taken seriously.

Chiang described the statement as an effort to prevent her departure from being reduced to what she called an inaccurate story involving incompetence, ambition for a bigger job or a major scandal. She said she wanted her legacy to reflect staying true to her core values, particularly during difficult circumstances.

The statement began with the phrase “Clarity is Kindness”, a phrase that Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has reportedly used on several occasions since taking the role a few months ago. Chiang ended by thanking former colleagues and others who had contacted her with support, adding that her departure was not how she had imagined her story at Microsoft would end and was not the whole story.
